Charlotte Knight is at a crossroads in her life; her long-term relationship ended so she agrees to an employment opportunity halfway across the country that promises to further her career. She is hired to illustrate a book of essays and poems by Rainer Maria Rilke, under the watchful eye of Jaa Morland. When she arrives at Draakensky, she meets the owner of the medieval style windmill, Jaa, who is older and mysterious. She learns about her sister’s murder, which the local police are still investigating and that she will be staying in the sisters cottage.
Not deterred, Charlotte is determined to make this opportunity work for her. She and Jaa have a disagreement over the vision for the project, but she finds her inspiration and the publishers loves it. Unfortunately, the ghosts that inhabit Draakensky do not seem to agree and dark magick starts to interfere.
She contemplates going back to Chicago more than once, but in town, Charlotte meets Marc Sexton a local restaurateur. He is handsome, charming and enigmatic. She can tell he is hiding something, but decides to trust him anyway and chooses not to leave Draakensky. A murder mystery and a romance full of magick and secrets, but will the magick be able to keep her out of danger?
The cadence of the writing is a bit choppy, but it added to the mystique of this ghost story. The characters are endearing and the story is interesting and well thought out. I liked how this paranormal fantasy took place in the real world, so it was easy to suspend reality and become immersed in this story. The author does a great job of setting the scene, a spine tingling atmospheric mystery with paranormal undertones. A world where magic exists with the elements but witches are shunned.
The story centers around the poems of Rainer Marie Rilke, which I found extremely creative and unique, but I feel the secondary storyline didn’t connect well enough to the main storyline. There is a unique mix of mythology and a more modern idea of magic and witch craft. The romance was not overdone and though there are a few racy scenes, they were not overly descriptive.
There was some page turning action leading up to the climax, and both the climax and ending were satisfying. Overall, I enjoyed this and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy or paranormal fantasy.
